I am a big believer in read aloud time - even when they are more than competent readers. it allows for cuddle time, for the possibility of introducing different genres, that they would otherwise avoid, and for discussing values and sub-texts. when mine were little, I would let them draw the characters we were reading or lie on the couch or even drift to sleep. we tried to do it after lunch and make it different from the bed-time reading that was daddy's domain. all of my kids are now obsessive readers. Last night we had a 40 minute discussion on the failures of the Harry Potter Movies to capture the ideas of self-sacrificing love, the need to share power and responsibility and dealing with anger! Mind blowing!
